Sugar Mountain rocks Madrid!

O passado 23 de fevereiro, assistimos ao concerto dos nossos paisanos pontevedreses Sugar Mountain na sala Wurlitzer Ballroom de Madrid. Rock do bom, com referências "setenteiras" e influências notáveis dos Faces e dos Rolling Stones (a formação é "calcada" de estas bandas: duas guitarras, teclados, baixo e bateria). Presentaram o seu último trabalho: In The Raw (Good Sounds) e fizeram versões dos dous grupos já citados, mais Stray Cats e The Kinks. Um som muito trabalhado, e entusiasmo contagioso da banda na actuação. Nota-se que desfrutam do que fazem.

Curiosamente, as fotos que peor sairam, são as melhores. Não é a primeira que me ocorre.

Tropicália em Soul Jazz Records

Vamos dar seu merecido à discográfica britânica SOUL jAZZ RECORDS, culpável de algum dos melhores momentos com que se têm deleitado os nossos ouvidos nos últimos anos. A respeito do seu glorioso catálogo, há que vê-lo para crê-lo. Qualquer tipo de música de qualquer parte do mundo tem sítio nos seus recompilatórios. O melhor de todos os estilos de todas as épocas que atravessou a música jamaicana pode-se encontrar nas suas séries dedicadas ao anhorado Studio One de Lee Perry e na imprescindível série Dynamite! (que já vai pela sexta entrega). Estas séries são responsáveis da redescoberta de Jackie Mittoo, o productor Joe Gibbs ou Sugar Minnott, por assinalar só as referências mais obvias que contam com disco individual dentro do catálogo de Soul Jazz Records.

Mas não são estas as únicas "delicatessen" presentes nos lançamentos da discográfica. Há discos dedicados ao rock mestiço dos emigrantes latinos nos EEUU (Chicano Power!, Barrio Nuevo, Nu Yorica! e Nu Yorica Roots!) ou à música afrocubana (Santería). Os seus discos de soul e funk americano com denominação de origem são inigualáveis: New Orleans Funk, Saturday Night Fish Fry, Philadelphia Roots, Soul Gospel, Miami Sound e Chicago Soul.

E, por suposto, Brasil não podia faltar. Há muitas referências brasileiras entre os discos de Soul Jazz Records: Papete (dedicado ao berimbau e à percussão canarinhas), Batucada/Capoeira, Brasil, The Sexual Life Of The Savages e As Mercenárias (ambos publicados com a etiqueta "brazilian post-punk").

Mas o que queremos destacar nós hoje é Tropicália; um repasso exaustivo em vinte canções ao movimento renovador da música brasileira que eclodiu em 1968, e que impulsaram Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil. No disco, além dos citados Gil e Veloso, há temas de Gal Costa, Os Mutantes, Jorge Ben e Tom Zé. Como todas as edições de Soul Jazz Records, vem acompanhado dum luxuoso libreto com fotos e informação extensa que serve para contextualizar e explicar a origem do tropicalismo e as suas consequências sociais e artísticas. Absolutamente recomendável!

Destacamos também, que a revista britânica Mojo, dedicou um artigo especial no seu número 158 (Janeiro 2007) a uma classificação comentada dos seus cinquenta melhores discos. Em galego há um blogue que segue a sua trajectória, vida e milagres para desfrute do blogomilho. É o +Dylan. E finalmente, o ano passado, a editorial Anagrama publicou o relato de Sam Shepard sobre a gira do '75 com a Rolling Thunder Revue. Imprescindível.


Poucos artistas há com a capacidade do de Duluth, Minnesotta, para reinventar-se a si própios sem trair a sua essência. Dylan tê-lo feito tão amiúde que os seus avatares definem épocas inteiras da música popular. Leva anos proposto para o Nobel de Literatura e é claro que mais cedo ou mais tarde terão de conceder-lho. Em música, não há prémio ou galardão importante de abondo para reconher a sua importância.

Semelha que aqueles que não puderam vê-lo em directo o passado verão, terão uma nova oportunidade porque já estão confirmadas algumas datas para uma nova gira europeia.

Depois do Modern Times de Dylan, publica-se outro dos discos do ano. Genialidade e creatividade a jacto. Surpreendente que um artista seja capaz de manter semelhante nível de qualidade durante tanto tempo e com a generosidade de Tom Waits. Trás pôr no mercado três discos num curto espaço de tempo (Alice, Blood Money, Real Gone), agora publica 56 canções para desfrute dos seus seguidores.

Recomendações

Uma emissora de rádio on-line: Pandora; que permite escolher e agrupar por estilos a música que um quer escutar.

Um livro: Los detectives salvajes, de Roberto Bolaño. A história dos membros dum grupo de vanguarda poética mexicano, com os detalhes do périplo dos dois líderes do movimento durante vinte anos. Estranho, apaixonante, maravilhoso, divertido e um exercício de estilo impresionante. Imprescindível.

Um disco: Pearl Jam. O último disco dos de Seattle é rock puro, com entranhas, sangue, raiva, força e dor. É tão bom, que semelha uma obra-prima e não o nono disco da banda.

The Bellrays em concerto

Já dissemos que este concerto seria dos que se lembram. The Bellrays portaram-se. O seu último disco pode não terminar de convencer a alguns, pode que seja um pouco mais soul e menos punk, mas em directo seguem a ser imparáveis e Lisa Kekaula é um tornado, uma screamer na melhor escola preta americana.

Pode algo tão parvo produzir nostalgia?

Empatia, sensibilidade, parelhas (e Dylan)

Ontem, Telemadrid ofereceu o segundo duma série de documentários da BBC sobre as diferentes maneiras que têm homens e mulheres de perceber as relações entre os sexos. Tratam-se neles os tópicos (os homens procuram mulheres com curvas porque é indicativo de fertilidade; as mulheres homens altos e que inspirem confiança e segurança) e pontos de vista mais originais (um zoólogo afirma que temos tendência a procurar na parelha rasgos faciais semelhantes aos nossos).

Uma das principais diferenças semelha estar na empatia, na facilidade para entender ou compartir os sentimentos alheios, que é muito alta nas mulheres e muito baixa nos homens. Os homens são bons para valorar objectos, mas não tanto para avaliar sentimentos. Num experimento do programa, vários homens e mulheres eram recolhidos por um actor num táxi que de caminho ao laboratório lhes contava várias coisas da sua vida. As mulheres lembravam a conversa com o homem; os homens lembravam todos os detalhes do carro.

No blogue de Xalundes, atopei o outro dia este teste, também da BBC. Nele mede-se a capacidade que temos para reconhecer um sorriso fingido. Eu acertei só 9 de 20, ainda que antes de começar a fazê-lo pedem que se valore de 1 a 7 a própria capacidade e eu pusera um 4, é dizer, colocava-me no meio da tábua já de partida.

Hoje fiquei muito surpreendido numa das minhas aulas por causa disto (da empatia, quero dizer). Com tudo o bom que um possa dizer deles, os alunos e as alunas da Secundária actual não são um prodígio nem de sensibilidade nem de conhecimentos vitais que facilitem o seu entendimento de certos temas. Normalmente, reagem bastante mal à música que propomos os adultos e tenho tido reacções muito negativas perante certos estilos ou cantantes. Pois bem. Para trabalhar os condicionais e as estruturas alternativas a eles, escolhi uma velha canção de Dylan. Vimos as estruturas, traduzimos a letra e no fim das aulas, enquanto a escutávamos, uma rapariga começou chorar. Estava completamente emocionada, identificada com os sentimentos que a Dylan lhe produzira a ruptura com a sua mulher. Nunca me passara nada semelhante e pergunto-me se o facto de que a pessoa que chorou era mulher terá algo a ver com o sucedido.
